Summer is in full bloom now!

And, there are so many activities going on and so many ways to play in Wichita and the surrounding towns. It amazes me to see how many different events there are this summer, and so many free ones!

So, we decided to share some ideas with you that also help you save money, because everyone loves free!!

The Sedgwick County Moms Network will compile a monthly guide of free activities and free ways for kids to play and enjoy life around the greater Wichita area. Scroll down to see free activities provided by museums, awesome parks to check out, story times, free arts and crafts, amazing city and seasonal events with no admission price, and much much more!

Arts and Fun Crafts

Teen Bird Photo Contest | June 02-11 @Augusta Library
Teens can send a photo of a bird taken with their phone or camera to [email protected], or as a message to AugustaPublicLibraryKidsFacebook. Only pictures of birds will be accepted for this contest. Please include your name and age.  Winners will be chosen by a board of anonymous judges.  All photos will be printed and displayed in the library as they are submitted.  Winners will be announced on June 11 at 6pm. Prizes will be awarded for 1st place ($25 gift card to Walmart), 2nd place ($20 gift card to Sonic), and 3rd place ($15 gift card to Subway).

School Kids Pet Photo Contest | June 14-18 @Augusta Library
Do you have the best pet in the entire county?  Send a photo along with why your pet is best to Ms. Mary at [email protected] or as a message to Augusta Public Library Kids Facebook.  Please include the child’s name, age, and how to contact.  All the entries will be printed and hung in the library and posted to Facebook.  A panel of anonymous judges will choose the winner of “Best Pet.” The winning pet will receive a species-appropriate prize! Winners will be announced at 5:00 pm on Friday, June 18 on Facebook.

Do you have a story in you? Are you SEARCHING for the story within? Join Miss Chelsea weekly as she teaches you how to write a story! Andover Library
The library has a large selection of puzzles for use in the library. They help introduce letters, numbers, and simple concepts, promote literacy and learning. They included books, videos, and activity items. You can check them out for a 3 week period.

Smoke on the Plains BBQ & Music Fest | June 10-12 @6am-10pm
After a year hiatus, plan to join us for the 10th Annual Smoke on the Plains Derby BBQ & Music Fest June 10, 11 and 12, 2021 at scenic High Park, located on the east side of Derby. This free, fun and family-friendly event is Derby’s largest gathering. Carnival Cost
$3 per ride or $25 for an all-you-can ride wristband.

Come one come all for a unique shopping experience! We will be lining the historic brick streets of Downtown Augusta with vendors, merchants, artisans, events and food trucks! Admission to the event is FREE!

Wichita Festival of the Arts | Saturday, June 19 @12pm
Take in the sun and take home a work of art! Over 35 local vendors will be on-site to showcase our community’s talents in arts and entertainment. Enjoy the music, take in a performance, or peruse the booths. The Kansas Wildlife Exhibit will have their daily animal feeding at noon and will be available to discuss the exhibit inhabitants with you. Chalk will be available to draw your favorite animal. Enjoy a snow cone from Kona Ice or a delicious meal from the Flying Stove. The Flying Stove will be at the park from 12-3pm. After enjoying the festival, stick around and play in the splash pad or playground.

Father’s Day Car Show | Sunday, June 20 @9am-4pm
Sedgwick County Zoo – Grab your crew, put the pedal to the metal and cruise on out to Sedgwick County Zoo for Father’s Day. See classic cars, antique autos and modern models while exploring your favorite animal exhibits. Dads are admitted free with an additional paid admission. Members get in free with membership card and photo ID.

Rock the library with Kansas City kids’ entertainer and author, Jim “Mr. Stinky Feet” Cosgrove. Come sing and dance during this high-energy, interactive show that will get the whole family rockin’. Join Ballet Wichita for Carnival of Animals at Forest Park in El Dorado. Carnival of Animals is a colorful journey through the animal kingdom set to the beloved music of Camille Saint-Saens. Space is limited, and social distancing will be enforced.  Since we are using the parking lot for seating, cars will need to be parked on the street. The movie will begin at dark, but seating will begin at 8:30 pm. Masks and social distancing are recommended at all library events.

Don’t forget about your family memberships to the local museums, zoos, and wildlife parks we have in the Greater Wichita area. Although the initial fee isn’t free, the rest of the year is! Memberships are a great way to really explore Wichita’s history, culture, and science. 

Our family has an annual membership to Exploration Place and Sedgwick County Zoo and we go to both at least once a month.

Yoga in the Art Garden | Saturday, June 19 from 9:00am @Wichita Art Museum
Join guest instructor Kelsea Wright from Limitless Yoga Studio for an all-levels flow class for ages 16 and older. This class provides a great workout, stretching out common problem areas in the body, and connecting your breath to your movements. Admission is free, and no registration is required. Sessions begin prior to the museum’s open hours and will be held in the Paula and Barry Downing Amphitheater with gorgeous views of the Art Garden. Social distancing will be in place for this outdoor activity with a maximum of 75 participants. Please bring your own yoga mat or towel and water bottle. In case of inclement weather, class will not be held.

Meet us on a few Fridays this summer for a morning of fishing. Each Fishing Friday will be at a different body of water around Newton. You bring your own tackle and water bottle, we will provide bait and lunch. Must pre-register for each Fishing Friday. Bring your own fishing tackle and water bottle, let us know at registration if you are in need of a fishing rod. We will provide fishing bait and a lunch of hot dogs & chips. Parents do not need to stay unless you want to.

Nature Time for Tots with Wichita Parks and Rec
Ages 3-5. It’s time to nurture nature. Children will connect with nature through stories, crafts, and hands-on activities that allow them to use their senses. Each class is led by a naturalist form the Great Plains Nature Center and will have a different focus, which may include sensory items that can be touched, such as fur, feathers, treats, insects, and worms. To improve the family experience, an adult must also participate. Registration is required.

There is no better space for kids to learn than the outdoors and there is no better play resource than nature. Naturalists and volunteers will be your guides to model interaction with nature; preschool children will provide the imagination. Come and go.

Join us for our weekly Playground Playdates where we meet up, make new friends, play, and chat at different local playgrounds throughout Wichita.

Barrington Park

Barrington Park in West Wichita is a small playground on a corner in a neighborhood off 21st and Tee Time Street with a fun playground and a small field.

Brownthrush Park

Brownthrush Park in West Wichita is a large square in the middle of a neighborhood off Central and Ridge with a fun playground, baseball diamond, and football field.

Join us on the front lawn of the GPNC for story time! These tales of the wild world around us may be best for age 6 and under, but everyone is welcome. Registration is not required.

Monkey Tales Storytime with Ms. Anne | Friday, June 11 @10:30am & Friday, June 24 @10:30am
Sing, dance, learn and laugh with Ms. Anne and Monkey during this 30-minute interactive monkey themed storytime for children ages 2-8 years. Anne with Lively Minds Consulting is bringing some tail-swinging fun to the library this summer to celebrate tails and tales! Registration is required.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover | Thursday, June 24 at 6pm
On Thursday, June 24th at 6 pm, we will be having a Stuffed Animal Sleepover. Please bring a stuffed animal to spend the night at the Library. There will be storytime and a craft. The stuffed animals will stay the night at the library and will available to pick up the next morning. All ages are welcome! Please call the library to sign up.

Photo Scavenger Hunt with Augusta Library | June 22-30
For the third year in a row, we challenge you: “How well do you know Augusta, Kansas?” All ages can participate and win! Five photos taken around our fair city will be posted on Facebook.  Find the location, and take a photo of that spot.  Bring your photo evidence to the children’s department in the library for a sweet prize!  If you don’t have access to Facebook, there will be printed picture clues available at the library.

Take-home craft kits for elementary-aged kids are available in the library lobby at 10 am.  There is no registration, but supplies are limited and are on a first-come basis.  Some supplies like scissors, crayons,  and glue may be needed from home.

Blood and Bones: A Dino Dig Murder Mystery | Friday, June 25 @6:30pm
*This is an in-person event at the library. Teens must wear a mask to the event and may remove it only to eat or drink during the allotted meal time*. You are a paleontologist in Argentina excavation of the latest prehistoric discovery, but the dig goes terribly wrong when the lead scientist, Dr. Luis, suddenly disappears. Now everyone is a suspect, and it’s up to you to find out what happened to Dr. Luis, and if you’ll be able to make it out of the site alive! This event includes dinner, an interactive murder mystery experience, a grand prize for the winner, and door prizes for all participants.

And join the summer story times. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and join Miss Victoria for stories, songs, and fun out on the back lawn. This story time is geared to children ages 4-6. We will do story time outside, weather permitting. If it is raining or soggy out, we will do story time on Facebook Live.

Preschoolers can join Ms. Mary for stories, puppets, songs, and dancing at Castle Park near the Splash Pad. Siblings of preschoolers are also welcome. Bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on, and a snack or drink for your own child.  A take-home preschool craft will be available.  Social distancing and masks are recommended at all library programs. Filming of storytime for publication on our websites and advertising may take place.

Stay after story time for an outdoor Mommy Mixer! The kids can play in the park with some outdoor toys and you can enjoy socializing with other caregivers and some coffee from Jane’s Landing!
